Lathe cutting: the cleanest edge, ideal for PP and PE

ROLL Lab · updated 24 October 2026 · sources at the end of the page

In shortOn a lathe the core spins and a fixed tool parts it: you get the cleanest, squarest edge, with little dust. It is the best cut for PP and PE cores and for tight tolerances.

How it works

The core is mounted on a rotating mandrel; a parting tool feeds in radially and cuts the wall, just like a metalworking lathe. The edge can be chamfered or deburred in the same pass.

Strengths and limits

  • Strengths: square, clean edge, tight tolerances, little material lost, excellent on PP and PE, which “smear” under a saw.
  • Limits: slower than a knife, one mandrel needed for each inside diameter, lower quality than a saw on rigid PVC.

When to choose it

Plastic cores, cores that must fit friction shafts with little play, precision work and deburred edges. For plastic cores there is a dedicated guide: cutting plastic cores.

The saw cuts anything but makes dust; the knife makes no dust but crushes the edge; the lathe gives the cleanest edge.
