How many paper cores fit in a truck or container?

ROLL Lab · app 9 of 11 · Prof: verdict now, full report by email · updated 24 October 2026

In shortRows of cores nest: the vertical pitch is 0.866 × Ø, not the diameter. Ten rows of Ø 100 cores stand 879 mm high, not 1,000. In containers, the door sets the limit, not the roof.

How the calculation works

The ROLL algorithm generates every sensible combination (horizontal or vertical, 1200×1000 and 1200×800 pallets both ways round, single high pack or double stack, a wide plus narrow pallet pair) and puts the one carrying the most cores on top. Rules: side overhang at most half the radius, length overhang up to 400 mm per side, 20 mm of clearance, container door 2,200 mm, single high pack at most 2,200 mm for handling.

Verified examples: Ø 100 × 1,200 cores on a mega trailer, 322 cores per stack in a standard double stack and 334 in an optimised one; Ø 178 × 2,000 in a 40′ HC container, 864 cores on the standard pallet and 942 with the wide plus narrow pair.

Frequently asked questions

How many cores fit on a pallet or in a truck?

It depends on the outside diameter, which is what takes up the space. Cores are stacked in staggered rows: the pitch between two rows is 0.866 × the diameter, not the full diameter. In containers, the door sets the limit (about 2,200 mm), not the roof. The calculator "How many cores in the truck?" tries every combination.

How much does a metre of paper core weigh?

Weight per metre = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × density. At a density of 800 kg/m³, a 76.5 × 7.5 mm core weighs about 1.58 kg/m. The calculator "How much does your core weigh?" does the sum for any size.
